From the buffalo legend to the current reign
Let yourself be led. The guided tour crosses the seven rooms in the order of the story: the founding legend, the dynasty, the struggles, the sacred, the yam, the land — and, to finish, the voices of those who keep this memory alive. In each room, the guide awaits you and leads you to the next.
The thread of the story
The seven stops
You can also join the tour along the way: each stop below leads straight to it.
- I
Founding History
Every story has a threshold. Savalou's begins before a buffalo no one could tame — listen to the legend first: it gives meaning to everything that follows.
- II
The Gbaguidi Dynasty
From Soha's victory a lineage was born: eighteen unbroken reigns since 1557. Walk along the timeline, pause on a name — every band is a life.
- III
Resistance
A kingdom that endures is a kingdom that knew how to say no. Facing the armies of Danxomè and then colonial rule, Savalou defended its freedom — this room keeps that memory.
- IV
Spiritualities
Savalou's strength is not only warlike. At Dankoli, under the seven-branch palm tree, in the signs of the Fa, the visible and the invisible answer one another — enter with respect.
- V
The Yam, Queen of Savalou
From the gods to the earth is but a step: every 15 August, the new yam comes up from the fields to the palace. It is the festival of first fruits — the very day chosen to inaugurate this museum.
- VI
Land of the Hills
Now widen your gaze: 2,674 km² of hills, sacred ponds and villages. The land the legend promised — here it is, in landscapes and soon in maps.

Voices of Savalou
It is time to listen. The elders, the dignitaries, the inhabitants: their voices in Mahi and Fon are the museum's most precious material — and the very reason for this whole tour.
